Hypothyroidism and thyrotoxicosis have detrimental effects on skeletal development and adult bone strength. These effects result from thyroid hormone actions in bone, although a direct role for TSH in osteoblasts and osteoclasts was postulated following analysis of TSH receptor (TSHR) null mice.
